Book Two, Chapter 9

1. Why does Orwell include detailed passages from Goldstein’s Book in 1984?
So we can know what the rest of the world is like

2. What three classes of people have always existed?
High, middle, lower

3. In What ways have these three classes changed? 
none other than in name

4. What is the purpose of war in the world of 1984?
to keep the general populous inline and explane all the restrictions and hardships

5. What are the two aims of the Party?
To take over the world and eliminate any ability to think


6. What are the two problems with which the Party is concerned?
To keep people from thinking anything against the Party and how to wipe out millions without any warning(apparently nukes are no good)

7. Why do all three superpowers forbid their citizens from associating with foreigners?
Other-wise they would realize that their governments are all the same and that they have been lied to

8. The governments of the three superpowers are alike in essence even though their forms of government have different names. Identify these similarities and explain why they exist?
they are basicly the same but call things different names that go with their region

9. What is the real "war" fought in each of the three governments? Your answer will explain the party slogan, "War is Peace."
The real war is against prevnting the loss of power in their country, so the unreal war is just to focus their populations' abbilities at not aceaving anything

10. What are the aims of the three groups?
High wants to stay high, middle wants to become high, and low aims high but is crushed by both the high and midle classes

11. What changes in the pattern occurred in the nineteenth century?
What is hinted at is that the last middle class rebbelion has occured and what was the main allies of WWII have been over run with their own commie rebbelion but it is slightly different from the USSR's new conquest in europe and China's large swath of territory in mid to lower Asia. It is the last because the new high class has learned how to prevent uprisings


12. How did socialism change in the twentieth century?
the people were convinced that Liberty and freedom were not needed so the middle and lower classes gave it up 


13. Why are the rulers in the twentieth century better at maintaining power than earlier tyrants?
Their country is in a constant state of emergency so the restrictons are accepted

14. What are the four ways an elite group falls from power? 
loss of intrest, conquered, governs ineffectively, or there is an uprising

15. How does the Inner Party make certain it will not fall from power? 
It hasent and wont make any mistakes of previous rulers, i.e. the four ways, and preventing the production of a martyr(s)

16. How is a person’s class determined in the 1984 world?
if a party member then you test in to the high or middle class, if born to a prol then you are a prol

17. What is doublethink and what is its purpose to the ruling class?
The rulers know what is actualy hapening but the also have to be completely unwavering and so are the most patriotic class

18. Why is the mutability of the past important to the ruling class?
So the people can't find out anything that acualy happened so it disorents the people causing some distress(probobly unconsciously)

Book Two, Chapter 10

1. What understanding does Winston gain about the common people?
He reallizes that the Prols really are humanity's last hope and hopefully they will become smart enough to throw off their shakles and rise up against the Inner Party

2. What is the significance of the glass paperweight here?
Their love for each other is over because they will be tourtured and killed, so they probobly wont see each other again
